Have you ever thought of the importance of water? Water is what gives life on planet Earth. Water is what all scientists have been looking for in all celestial objects in space. Water is the most important necessity needed for human survival. Without water, life wouldn’t exist and we wouldn’t exist either, and that’s why it is extremely important to conserve our most abundant natural resource. For humans, the intake of water is essential for living and about sixty person of the human body is made up of water which supplies it to the organs. As you can imagine, life without water is what we fear and running out of water is our biggest nightmare, and in some parts of the world, the people there are struggling to conserve water.

Our state of California has just recently gotten out of drought. Living here, many people saw and witnessed the amount of water in the nearby lakes, oceans, and bodies of water go down but, thanks to the people living here, we have been able to cut down usage of water and conserve as much water as possible. By doing this, this state is no longer in drought but, water still needs to be conserved in order to prevent a drought from ever happening again. However, what we have experienced is nothing compared to what others have been and still are experiencing in South Africa. In 2015, South Africa was hit with one of the worst droughts mostly affecting the city of Cape Town which is home to around four million people. Over the past three years, there has been a dramatic decrease in the amount of water existing. According to climatologists, climate change is a contributing factor causing the sudden decrease in water. The situation is described something that happened once in a millenia. It was predicted that the day the water level would go way too down that it would be necessary for the engineers to cut off water supply is April of 2018. This day is known as day 0. After knowing that day 0 was coming up soon, inhabitants of the city have made a major effort to cut down water usage. Each day, one person is allowed 13 gallons of water per day. As day 0 is approaching, more and ore people are making attempts to reduce water. However, after Day 0 is reached when 13.5 percent of the water is remaining, all water supplies would be cut off and only used for public health facilities such as hospitals. For normal residents living within the city, they would be forced to line up in huge lines t get their share of the water. The amount that would be given would be only 6.6 gallons of water per person which is the bare minimum needed for survival. Due to the genral population’s determination of not reaching Day 0, the amount of water being used has been drastically decreased pushing the date from April, 2018 to either the end of this year or some time in 2018.

While people know that soon they will not have access to any water they have been putting in great efforts to conserve this natural resource. It might be the most abundant but, it is still important not to waste it to prevent fallinf into any type of crisis like the one Cape Town is facing. To prevent any form of this from happening, we can all pitch in to help conserve water. We waste a huge amount of water everyday without realizing it so, it is important to be aware of what we are using and wasting to prevent any type of water shortage ini our community. There are many waays we can conserve water from leaking any water leakages to not keeping the tap open. So, start saving water now!
