Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time is an adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s novel of the same name. Directed by Ava DuVernay and starring Storm Reid, Chris Pine, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon, the film makes for an entertaining experience with a cast that includes a generous amount of very famous actors. This is probably one of the reasons that the movie was so eagerly awaited (not to mention the incredible story it is based on), however in my opinion the movie could have been done better. Granted, the visuals were absolutely stunning and a lot of scenes had psychedelic animation and fantastic costumes/makeup that really enhanced the film, however I feel that the plot was a bit too rushed (one can imagine that the film cut out significant parts of the book), certain acting moments a bit forced, and some of the attempts at humor remained just attempts. Despite all of this, the film upheld many positive themes that put emphasis on many possible morals of the story, encouraging viewers to believe in themselves and work through the darkness. It’s good that they chose to display those concepts in the film, as since the target audience is children, it is important to use these opportunities to instill positive messages in young minds. The movie also had a fairly good soundtrack, but their visuals truly stood out most of all, as the special effects were in my opinion the most memorable part of the film, bringing everything to life in a vivid, magical way (think lots of light, color, and elaborate changing costumes). Overall, the film told the story well despite several questionable adaptations, and I recommend seeing it nonetheless. If you love the story, the actors, inspiring messages, or even just special effects, chances are you will find something charming about the movie. A Wrinkle in Time is truly an entertaining adaptation of the novel that offers beautiful visuals, talented actors, and uplifting messages, making it a relatively well-made film.
